MILAN — These parsimonious days fashion trends often start with the accessories, usually the least expensive and therefore most sellable items in a collection.

It’s been a big week for Nairobi-born, New York–based artist Wangechi Mutu. On Tuesday, Mutu won Deutsche Bank’s international Artist of the Year award. On Wednesday, her first North American solo show opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. And throughout the week, she’s been making art for more international shows.
